Accommodation Inspirations - Part 4 Foxdown Hut

Perched high on a hillside overlooking a cow and sheep farm is the elegant and luxurious, Foxdown Hut. This is off grid life on a super flash scale.

Walking down the slope from where you park your car to the hut entrance is quite a statement - the views spread out in front of you are quite something. Stretching for miles all you can make out is sheep, cows, rolling farmland, no human life all the way across to the Culverdon Ranges beyond.

The view from Foxdown Hut takes the breath away

I entered through the sliding doors and my breath was taken away by the hut itself. Alas a hut is not an adequate description. A stunning kitchen area gives way to a large dining space and stunning lounge, complete with incredible decoration (which has been taken from old items collected from the owner’s families farm over the decades). An outdoor bath sits on the edge of a grand deck area complete with bean bags to relax with a glass of wine and absorb those stunning views that never get boring.

A bedroom and a beautiful bathroom lead off the main area. As I settled myself down, I was almost overwhelmed by the grandness of the place, a full kitchen to self-cater, a slice of homemade brownie kindly left by my host and a relaxing deck that lent itself to some magical views. The only downside was the flies - being a cow and sheep farm meant that there were swarms of them that were impossible to keep out of the hut unless you closed the doors - not really an option on a sweltering summers day. No amount of fly spray could contain them. It was a shame, but I guess one of those things when choosing to stay out on a farm.

I could have lingered in the hut and never have left but a walk from the back up to the very top reaches of the farm enticed me to stretch my legs. On a sunny day with clear skies, I clambered up the peaks on a thigh stinging walk. More incredible views greeted me of the Canterbury Plains and Pacific Ocean beyond.

Foxdown Hut is the perfect spot for those seeking an isolated break with more luxurious touches than a 5-star hotel - alas just not the room service!
