Blue cod, New Zealand's South Islands favourite battered fish
Hungry after my morning excitement I headed back to the nearby settlement of Waikawa. I couldn’t let myself get too carried away as Waikawa is a very small fishing village offering a limited array of amenities. On my drive through though I spotted an interesting spot called Blue Cod Blues which caught my attention. An old converted caravan parked up at the side of the road is the local fish and chip joint. Blue Cod is a popular fish in these parts and is regularly dished up in take away outlets and restaurants throughout the country. I couldn’t resist dropping in for a freshly fried fillet of my own. Now sufficiently sustained I resumed my journey along the unsealed gravel roads, a common feature in The Catlins area, where there is never a traffic overload.
